I choose to trust people until I'm given a reason to do otherwise. That had been the case with Alexei. I couldn't see that he had already become someone different from the Commandant I admired, the ideal knight, until it was too late. Even now, I sometimes wonder how Alexei could have come to that.

It isn't fair for all the people who aren't like Alexei. If I began doubting everyone on the assumption that they might turn out to be just like Alexei, then I risk limiting myself to what I feel is safe.
